Why Odin needs the Samsung USB Driver

Odin doesn’t use the normal file transfer connection. When your Galaxy phone is in Download Mode, it shows up on the PC as a USB modem, and Odin sends the firmware through the COM port that modem creates.

Windows needs the Samsung driver to set that modem up properly. Without it, the phone never gets a proper COM port, and Odin just sits there with an empty ID:COM box.

There’s more. The same package also handles ADB, MTP file transfer and USB tethering. So it’s worth keeping installed even when you’re not flashing anything.

How to install the Samsung USB Driver

The whole thing takes about two minutes. Do it before you connect the phone for the first time.

1. Unplug your Galaxy phone from the PC.
2. Download SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.9.5.0.exe using the button above.
3. Right-click the file, open Properties, and check the Digital Signatures tab. The signer should be Samsung Electronics CO., LTD.
4. Double-click the file and go through the installer with the default options.
5. Wait for it to finish, close the installer, and restart the PC.
6. Boot your phone into Download Mode and connect it with a data cable.
7. Open Odin. You should see a highlighted ID:COM box and an “Added!!” line in the Log tab.

Check that Windows sees your phone

If Odin still shows nothing, Device Manager will tell you what’s going on. Keep the phone in Download Mode and connected while you check.

1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
2. Expand Modems. You should see SAMSUNG Mobile USB Modem.
3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. You should see SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device.

If both are there without a yellow warning sign, the driver is fine and the problem is somewhere else. Check the cable, the port and the fixes below.

If the phone sits under Other devices with a yellow warning sign, the driver didn’t install correctly. Uninstall it, restart the PC, and install it again.

For the tech-savvy: a Galaxy phone in Download Mode uses the USB ID VID_04E8&PID_685D. You can confirm it under the device’s Properties > Details > Hardware Ids.

Samsung USB Driver not working?

Most “driver problems” I’ve seen turn out to be something else. Go through this list in order.

• Use a cable that can carry data. A lot of cables that come with power banks and cheap chargers only charge.
• Plug into a USB port on the PC itself. On a desktop, use a port on the back. Skip USB hubs and front panel ports.
• Close Smart Switch and any other phone manager app before you open Odin.
• Run Odin as administrator.
• Reinstall the driver. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, uninstall SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones, restart, and install v1.9.5.0 again.
• Put the phone back into Download Mode. Sometimes it just needs a fresh connection.
• Try another PC if nothing else works. It rules out a Windows problem in a few minutes.

If Odin detects the phone but the flash fails, the driver has done its job. Check my list of Odin errors and fixes instead.

Do you need Smart Switch for Odin?

No. Smart Switch for PC installs a Samsung USB driver too, but it also runs a background service that can grab the phone’s connection before Odin does.

For flashing, the standalone driver package on this page is all you need. If you already have Smart Switch installed, you don’t have to remove it. Just make sure it’s fully closed, including the icon in the system tray.

Windows on ARM laptops

Here’s something most driver pages don’t mention. The driver files in v1.9.5.0 include ARM64 builds, so the driver installs on Windows laptops with Snapdragon chips too.

Odin itself is a 32-bit Windows app, and Windows on ARM runs those through emulation. I haven’t flashed a phone from an ARM laptop myself, so if you try it, let me know how it goes.
